WHAT TO EXPECT AT A MEET/WHAT TO BRING
At a normal meet, swimmers are allowed to do a maximum of 4 events, 2 individual and 2 relays. I do my best to get everyone in 4 events at every meet, although sometimes I cannot get 2 relays for everyone if there is an odd number of kids at the meet. This is the same for virtual meets this year.
I recommend bringing multiple towels to a meet, warm clothes (as it can get cool at night), a water bottle, and everything you need to swim.
I do not recommend wearing a swim shirt in races. In practice that is totally fine, but it really weighs the swimmer down, so please have your child take it off just for the race (and then they can put it right back on!).
Lastly, we really need all kids to be safe during the meet. We want everyone to have fun, but we also do not want kids to get hurt. We are asking that during meets, swimmers are not playing with other sports equipment (baseball bats, soccer balls, etc.). Thanks!
MEETS
Here is how the first meet will work. We will adjust for meet 2 after we see how this goes.
How will the meet work?
- 10&younger swimmers will arrive at 5PM for warmups and the meet will start as soon as we are done with warmups (5:30 estimate). We will be running relay events first so when swimmers are done with individual events, they will be able to leave. 6&unders should be done around 6:15, all others will be done by 7-7:15.
- 11&older swimmers will arrive at 7:15 for warm ups and we will start as soon as we are warmed up.
- We will allow spectators, but please remember to social distance and if you are not vaccinated, please keep your mask on.
- We will have a red, white, and blue theme for Memorial Day Weekend...wear your red, white, and blue! You can make posters in that theme and bring as well or we will have some supplies to make posters too!
- We will not have concessions, so please bring snacks and a drink if you would like something
VOLUNTEER SIGN-UPS
We need volunteers for our meets, as always, and every family is expected to volunteer in 2 meets unless you paid the volunteer opt out fee when you registered. We really need volunteers! Go to the website, mtps.swimtopia.com, click on “calendar” and you will see the job sign up button for meet 1.
ASA CHAMPIONSHIPS
We will attend the ASA Championship Meet again this year at Georgia Tech, though it will look a little different. Here is how it works...to swim in the meet, it is $40 per swimmer (they had to up the price this year). Swimmers get to swim in 2 individual events and 2 relays (just like a normal meet). Our divisional championship (all the teams in our "region") will be on either Wednesday, June 23, or Thursday, June 24. We will either swim from 9AM-12:30 or from 3:30PM-7PM. There is no final sessions this year, only the one session and they will combine all sessions virtually to see the ultimate winners of each event. At this point, they are not allowing spectators, but we will be allowed a few parents to help on deck and also to volunteer.
I'm hoping we have a good group go like we did the last few years! We had over 60 attend in 2018 and about 50 in 2019! I need your form (attached) and $40 by Friday, June 12 if you are going to attend the meet. You can pay with cash or go to the website and click on “shop”. For those that want to participate in the state qualifying meet, we will use this meet as the state qualifying meet. The state meet is July 16 for 10&unders and July 17 for 11&ups, and the Sandy Springs team will have practice somewhere in the area leading up to the meet.
Some of you already paid for this with your registration and are listed below, though we didn’t know of the fee change when you paid. Please go to the website, click on shop, and purchase the ASA meet additional fee for $17, or bring it in cash. I still need your form too.

11&OLDER BUDDY PROGRAM
We are starting a buddy program this year where swimmers 11 and older will be paired with an 8&under swimmer. Our hope is that the older kid will bring a treat occasionally (to “meets”) and be there to help the little one. And they can cheer for each other! If your 11&older kid would like to participate, please let me know. The goal is to have it set up and ready to announce at our first Fun Friday, June 4.
Here is who I have signed up to be a buddy to an 8&under...let me know if you want to join in!
