Wavemakers Weekly, 5/21

Hey guys,

SCHEDULE

This week we have a funky schedule due to the last day of school and next week as well due to Memorial Day.  Here are both weeks:

Week of 5/22

Monday-normal evening practice, but at Princeton Square

Tuesday-practice meet, EVERYONE arrives at 5PM for warm-ups

Wednesday-normal evening practice

Thursday-NO practice

Friday- morning practice at Mark Trail: 7-10 year olds 8:30-9:30; 6&under 9:30-10; 11&up 10-11

Week of 5/29

Monday-NO practice-Memorial Day

Tuesday-morning practice, first meet at Gainesborough

Wednesday-morning practice at Mark Trail, evening practice at Princeton Square

Thursday-morning practice at Mark Trail, evening practice at Princeton Square

Friday- morning practice at Mark Trail

POOLS THIS WEEK

Mark Trail is still closed, so we will have practice at Princeton Square again on Monday evening. The pool is supposed to be fixed on Tuesday, so we are still planning to have our practice meet on Tuesday night at Mark Trail.  If for some reason the pool does not get fixed, our plan B is to have the meet on Wednesday, just fyi.

DIRECTIONS TO MEETS

For directions to any meets, go to the “swim meets” tab on the website and click on the location name for the place you need directions.

RSVP FOR MEETS

The deadline to RSVP for the first real meet (5/30 at Gainesborough is this Tuesday (always 1 week prior).  I am still getting emails from people about missing this Tuesday, and I really want to stress that it is crucial that you let me know by the deadline (unless it’s an illness last minute).  Entering kids in a meet is a huge puzzle and when one piece is taken out, it is very difficult to complete the puzzle…especially when the puzzle is already done.  I am begging of you all to please let me know by the deadline.  Thanks in advance.

COACH JULIE'S NUMBER

If you don't have it already, please store my number in your phone: 770-289-6626.

VOLUNTEERS

We are short volunteers for the practice meet on Tuesday. Please go to this link and sign-up if you can help.  Also, on the site there are only spots for 7 timers, but we need 11 for the practice meet (since there isn’t another team), so if you can time but are not signed up, please email Christina Toole at: [email protected] so we can fill the 11 slots that we need.  Thanks!

WHAT TO EXPECT AT A MEET/WHAT TO BRING

For the practice meet, we will do each of the strokes (25's for 10&under and 50's for 11&up) in the order they occur in a normal meet: free, back, breast, fly.  We will not do relays or the longer events.  If a child doesn't know how to do one of the strokes, he/she will not be entered in that stroke.  Everyone will do freestyle, starting with 6&under girls and going up to 15-18 boys, and then everyone will do backstroke, etc.  I expect to have the meet finished by 7:30.

At a normal meet, swimmers are allowed to do a maximum of 4 events, 2 individual and 2 relays.  I do my best to get everyone in 4 events at every meet, although sometimes I cannot get 2 relays for everyone if there is an odd number of kids at the meet.

I recommend bringing multiple towels to a meet, warm clothes (as it can get cool at night), a water bottle, and everything you need to swim.  We do have concessions at every meet as well.  The meets do last until about 9ish, and the free relay for all kids 7 and older is the last event.  Please be prepared to be there until about 9 or so.  For 6&unders, their events will be done in the first half of the meet, so they will be finished earlier.

NOTE ABOUT PETS

As a reminder, MTC rules do not allow pets in the pool area.  Thanks!

WHO IS MISSING THE PRACTICE MEET?

Here is the final list of who I have as being out of the practice meet (juniors included).  If your child is not on this list, he/she is entered in the meet.  Please let me know ASAP if your child is sick and will not be there Tuesday night.

MEETING RECAP

Here are notes from the parent meeting from Thursday.  Please let us know if you have any questions.

Volunteering:  Our first mock meet is Tuesday.  Please make sure to sign up for your three volunteer shifts.  The link is http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0948a4ab22a02-volunteer.  Do it now before all the good shifts are taken.  We are asking when you sign up to add your cell phone so the volunteer coordinators are not having to track people down.  Our volunteer coordinators, Laine Walker and Christina Toole,  will have name tags at each meet with your post and time.  In order to make the meets run smoothly everyone needs to sign up for at least three shifts.  Please be on time.  Also, please do not leave your post early as this will not count as your volunteer shift.

House Keeping:  We are asking swimmers not to go on the tennis courts.  Please pick up after yourself at practices and meets.  When parking, please do not park on the grass.  If there is no parking left in the parking lot durning practices or meets, please park only on the north side of Sevile Chase.

Contacting Coach Julie:  The best way to get in touch with Coach Julie is through email.  During practice she needs to concentrate on the swimmers.

Meet Information

Swimmers need to arrive at 4:30 for warm-ups when we’re home team and 4:45 when we’re the away team.  If you are unable to attend a meet, please let Coach Julie know.  There is a spot on the website to RSVP.  She needs to know as soon as possible because it will effect relays and other swimmers opportunity to swim.  If you child wakes up sick, please email Julie immediately.  She needs to have her line up ready.

If you have any questions during practice or a meet, please ask one of us.  The best way to get in touch with Julie is through email.  When she is coaching her eyes need to be on the kids.

Kids are NOT allowed in pool or baby pools during meet- safety concern - no dangling feet in lanes, no sitting on stairs, NO PLAYING IN BABY POOL

Our concession stand can provide dinner for you and your family – we typically have pizza or hot dogs for sale.  Also, please remember that this is a family event and we do not encourage alcohol.

A day in the life of a swim meet:

  • When your child arrives, please send them to the bullpen.  This is where kids get ready to swim and are informed of which events they will be participating in.
  • After an event, the child should go back to a designated “ready area”  with their teammates to wait for the next event.  The volunteers are not responsible to hunting down your children.  Please encourage your child to go back to the Ready area to wait for the next event.  If they need to eat or something, please bring it to them in the area.
  • Each team is required to have a deck manager who will work in a ready area near the starting end of the pool and make sure the kids are lined up according to event/heat/lane.  So, the bull pens will be primarily needed for marking up the kids and helping with the little kids relays.
  • There is an announcer, so kids & parents need to be listening for their events.
  •  Meets typically last from 5:30-9:30pm depending on amount of swimmers- remind swimmers, parents, and children when leaving pool in dark—Meets start at 5:30
  • Usually after the meet, we will designate a place to grab dinner, an ice cream or milkshake.  We are open to suggestions this year on where to go.
